ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEM

Visual Communication Design
Fall 2022 Internship
University of Texas at Arlington

Primary Objectives:

A multi-phase project to create a comprehensive wayfinding system, including signage and environmental graphics for the University of Texas at Arlington FabLab.

Fall 2023 / Phase 01

Primary Signage - Space Delineation
A design system that delineates each main equipment area. Equipment area is a grouping of analogous equipment or fabrication process.

Research

Catagorize and analyze each area in the FabLab space. Conduct comprehensive competitive audits of wayfinding, signage, and environmental design systems. Group information into primary signage (space delineation), secondary signage (space navigation), and tertiary graphics (equipment information and policies) categories.

Criteria:
Define each area of the FabLab by it’s process / equipment

Ideation

Brainstorm and generate 5 design systems for the primary signage system — present findings to the supervisor.

Include:
Sketches, mock-ups, and supportive research
images

PrototypePrototype 3 design system concepts. Include rough physical models for each system. Prototypes can be a partial scale. Present findings to the committee - FabLab supervisor, Director of Marketing + Communication, and Assistant Dean of the UTA Libraries. A single design system concept will be chosen during the meeting.

Include:
Material samples, supporting research images,
and sketches

Iterations

Refine the design system concept chose by the committee. Adjust designs based on feedback and mock-up new prototypes.

Fabrication

Create a bill of materials for all designs at full scale. Generate cost analysis. Fabricate all designs.

Criteria:
Method of installation/display must be
incorporated into designs.

Delivery

Fully assembled primary signage and mounting system for each area of the FabLab.

Include:
Upload all files to the file management
structure in Teams. Export exploded diagram PDF, including installation instructions. 2023 Visual Communication summer interns will complete the installation of designs and secondary and tertiary design systems.
